We have a new website!
…and you’re looking at it!
So we went and got ourselves a new website! We hope that with the addition of a blog and an easier to update website, it will keep people coming back. We’re also trying to expand our youth programs and volunteer base, so if you’re interested in either of these, please check them out.
Also, our blog has an rss feed on it, so if you use an rss reader, please subscribe! You’ll be kept up-to-date with the latest events, volunteer opportunities, and news from the cycling activism world.
We really need new volunteers!!
We’ve lost some dedicated folks recently due to them moving, and can use some fresh faces! It can be difficult to keep this place running, so if you’ve ever benefited from the shop, now’s your chance to give back. We especially need people to help staff the shop. You don’t necessarily need bike mechanic skills to do this, it’s something that you can pick up as you get involved.
Staffing entails one of three things:
- Greeting - This involves saying “hi” to people as they come in and directing them to the resources to figure out what they need. If they need some tools to work on a bike, you send them in. If they are looking for a bike, you set them on the right track.
- Volunteer Coordinating – Every time we’re open, we get a bunch of people looking for something to do and help out. The volunteer coordinator directs them to a task. Tasks include everything from taking out the trash and recycling to stripping down messed up bikes to organizing parts.
- Mechanic Help – The Mechanic on duty is basically there to help people figure out problems and give them the advice and resources needed to figure it out.
We run occasional volunteer trainings that show you how to handle these roles. You will also be asked to “shadow” an experienced volunteer until you feel comfortable to handle it on your own.
Even if you can only dedicate once a month to staffing a shift, it really helps, believe us.
