Who We Are

Free Ride is not a traditional repair shop, where you drop off a bike and someone fixes it, but a bicycle educational facility. There is that old saying “if you give a person a fish they will eat for a day but if you teach them how to fish they will eat for a lifetime.” That is our basic philosophy at Free Ride!

The main face of our shop is our open hours, when we open our doors to the public. During Adult Open Shop, you can fix your own bike, volunteer, donate, buy or Earn-A-Bike. Click for Details.

Although we are only open 3-4 days a week, there is a lot that goes on at our shop during the hours that we aren’t open to the public. We run youth programs, adult classes, and volunteer nights, among other things.

We are also a user supported project. Not only does a project like this need money to sustain, it needs dedicated volunteers. We’ve organized the shop as a collective, so there is no one person that runs the program. Those kind souls that volunteer a certain amount of hours can become a collective member. Membership allows you to vote, discuss, and participate in the direction of the organization. Membership also allows you to get discounts on parts and gear as well as be able to sign up to run classes and youth programs. Click for more details.

So take some time, check us out, and if you like what you see, get involved!

We’re starting the pedal revolution one ride at a time.

We are a 501c3 Non Profit organization, a project of Bike Pittsburgh.
